To relive the good times when Eudora Welty entertained friends in the Garden and on the side porch of the Welty home, the public is invited to a Party at the Eudora Welty Garden on June 4 from 6 – 8:30pm Guests may listen and dance to the sounds of “The Session,” a six-piece Subgroup of Bob Davidson’s Capital City Stage Band. They’ll be playing swing and jazz numbers from the thirties through the fifties, including some of Eudora’s favorites. Welty scholar Suzanne Marrs will also relate brief stories about the music she loved (she was a fan of Fats Waller!). Anecdotes sprinkled throughout The evening will include references to music in such Welty stories as “The Hitch-hikers,” “Powerhouse,” “Music from Spain,” and “June Recital.” The party will be held under a large tent, and light refreshments and libations will be served. Parking is generously being made available on the Campus of Belhaven University off Pinehurst Street. Guests may visit the recreated clubhouse in the Woodland Garden, which Eudora called “the Penthouse,” or “The House of Passions Pent.” It was the site of many happy gatherings of Eudora and friends. This festive event, sponsored by the Eudora Welty Foundation together with The Eudora Welty House And Garden, is part of the Welty Biennial, a 12-week Series of cultural activities, performances, and exhibits in jackson.
